Diving into Product Management

<aside> 🛠 What do we mean when we say product?

'Product' can be widely referred to as a digital solution that offers a service to people in order to solve a problem that they have.

For example, Uber is a product making transit and food more accessible to users facing a gap or lacking convenience in urban mobility.

Products in a traditional sense are also physical (for example, a chair) and increasingly hybrid (for example, an Echo dot).

<aside> 🧐 So, what are product roles?

Product roles are DIVERSE! The most common ones include:

• Product Management (identifying problems, defining solutions, measuring value)
• Product Design (focusing on how a product looks, feels, and works)
• Product Marketing (strategizing the commercial success of a product-will people buy and use this product?)

While traditionally product people have come from a technical background, this is no longer a norm. Just how problems are multi-faceted, product teams are interdisciplinary!

🤷‍♀️ So . . . what exactly do we do?

• Host workshops: hear from product folks about their journey, tips, and insights
• Promote project-led experience: gain practical, resume-ready experience by working together in cross-functional teams (design, marketing, user research, engineering, sales)
• Build community: surround yourself with peers who support you in exploring product by sharing their experience, and breaking into the field with mock interviews.

Hailing from varied academic and personal backgrounds, we didn’t have much exposure to product when we started. In fact, we wished we had a like-minded community around us. Sensing this gap on campus, Productocto was formed. Our values of inclusion, empathy, and interpersonal growth drive our mission-driven approach of raising interest, passion, and accessibility surrounding this field. Anyone can be a PM!
